Apart from the amazing displays of fashion there's also the Lace Study Centre at the Powerhouse Museum (Mon-Sat 10:30-1:30).

The picture above is an illustration in lace of the Biblical story Judith and Holofernes and the video on the website link above gives a short explanation. An example of the way lace was also used for story telling.
Lace study centre is open to all and encourages participation.  Also provides fascinating insight into the history of lacemaking.
