Project

Continuous curves quilt

By Spotlight

Inspired by Beth Miller... we’ve tried our own version of this technique.
Final Result
Materials
To make the quilt look interesting 13 different fabrics were used in a variety of pattern, scale, intensity and value for the curved section and a plain colour fabric was chosen for the borders.
Vliesofix, baking paper or appliqué mat, matching thread and general quilting requirements were also used.
Step 1
Lay out the fabrics in sewing order 1-13. Some fabrics will be used a second time but that order does not need to be decided until later.
Step 2
Cut and sew the curved pieced top. This was done using the alternative method of sewing easy curves. Seams were not pinned but care must be taken not to stretch the fabric as you sew. There is no need to trim the ends as this helps to form a
pleasing curve for adding the borders.
Step 3
When all 13 fabrics have been sewn decide on which fabrics will be repeated. This will be determined by the width of the border and whether it will be on all 4 sides or just two. Select the remaining fabrics and set out in sewing order. These can be added onto either end.

In this quilt the same fabric was used at the top and bottom of the curved section to create a different border to that used on the sides.
Step 4
From the border fabric cut 2 x 7” strips across the width of the fabric. Use the rotary cutter to cut a gentle curve up the side of the pieced top then along one side of the border. Sew and press as before. Repeat for other side.
Step 5
For my individual border design I used the designs on the fabrics to create the flowers.

Draw different sized flower shapes onto paper side of vliesofix and roughly cut out.

Place shapes paper side up, on reverse side of fabric using the design to create the centre of the flower. Iron to back of fabric and using sharp scissors cut out along the lines.

Remove backing paper, position on quilt border and press in place.
Step 6
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together. Quilt as desired. Join together strips of fabric used in the pieced top to use as binding. Attach a label.
Handy Hint
Working with freehand curves opens the door to create individual abstract quilts.
