Hot stuff! Coffee sleeve

Have fun with free machine embroidery & use your fabric scraps in this simple project that makes a great office gift.

Materials

• 12cm x 30cm fabric for outside
• 12cm x 30cm cotton or cotton blend fabric for lining
• 12cm x 30cm med iron-on pellon or batting
• matching thread
• optional - thread for embellishing & edging
• Vliesofix (fusible web)
• scissors, pins
• sewing machine
• baking paper or appliqué mat
• iron

Step 1

Print out template. Using template as a guide cut the fabric for the outside, the lining and the pellon or batting 2cm larger as stitching can cause the piece to shrink.

Step 2

Place pellon on ironing board fusible side up with wrong side of lining on top. Cover with baking paper and fuse together with the iron. Separate small area of Vliesofix from backing paper and tear off small pieces. With lining piece pellon side up, cover with small torn pieces of Vliesofix. Place outside fabric on top, cover with baking paper and fuse together with the iron. All 3 layers are now fused together.

Step 3

Add straight, zigzag, decorative or free-motion stitching to the work. Add as much or as little as desired. When stitching is complete pin template onto work and cut out the sleeve. Zigzag all the way around the edge twice then add extra rows along the top and bottom edges only. Pin the short ends together and zigzag to across the ends to close.

Variations

Create your own fabric. Cut fabric scraps into strips, machine together in a random order using 0.5cm seam allowance until the piece is approx 12cm x 30cm. Press seams. Cut out pellon and lining as in step 1 then repeat steps 2 and 3.

Handy Hint

Make a fashion statement and dress up your morning cup of coffee. Add funky trims or an outside pocket to hold your coffee card. Great Christmas gift to make!
