All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
From fabric A (cream homespun) cut:
• 16 x 1 1/2” strips for checkerboard blocks.
• 4 x 1 1/2" strips crosscut into eight 1 1/2” x 20” strips for checkerboard blocks.
• 3 x 4 1/2” strips crosscut into 24 x 4 1/2” squares.
• 12 x 3 1/2” strips crosscut into 140 x 3 1/2” squares.
• 2 x 14” strips crosscut into 4 x 14” squares; cut twice diagonally to make 14 quarter-square setting triangles.
• 2 x 7 1/2” squares from remaining fabric; cut in half diagonally to make 4 corner setting triangles.
From fabric B (green daisies) cut:.
• 2 x 1 1/2” strip for checkerboard blocks.
• 1 x 1 1/2” strip crosscut into 1 x 20” strips for checkerboard blocks.
From fabric C (yellow diamonds & dots) cut:
• 5 x 1 1/2” strips for checkerboard blocks.
From fabric D (blue leaves & dots) cut:
• 5 x 1 1/2” strips for checkerboard blocks.
From fabric E (green flowers allover) cut:
• 2 x 1 1/2” strips for checkerboard blocks.
• 1 x 1 1/2” strip crosscut into 1 x 20” strip for checkerboard blocks.
From fabric F (purple flowers allover) cut:
• 2 x 1 1/2” strips for checkerboard blocks.
• 1 x 1 1/2” strip crosscut into 1 x 20” strip for checkerboard blocks.
From fabric G (red daisies & dots) cut:
• 2 x 1 1/2” strips for checkerboard blocks.
• 1 x 1 1/2” strip crosscut into 1 x 20” strip for checkerboard blocks.
• 6 x 2 1/2” strips for binding.
From fabric H (orange daisies & dots) cut:
• 5 x 1 1/2” strips for checkerboard blocks.
From fabric I (red/blue dotted floral) cut:
• 3 x 4 1/2” strips crosscut into 24 x 4 1/2” squares. - Step 2
- Blocks
Checkerboard Blocks1 & 2
Remove the selvedges from all strips.
Sew one 1 1/2” Fabric B strip to each side of one 1 1/2” Fabric A strip to make one strip set (diagram 1).
- Step 3
- Crosscut the strip set into 20 x 1 1/2” units for the checkerboard top and bottom rows (diagram 2).

- Step 4
- Sew one 1 1/2” x 20” Fabric A strip to each side of one 1 1/2” x 20” Fabric B strip to make one strip set (diagram 3).

- Step 5
- Crosscut the strip set into 10 x 1 1/2” units for the checkerboard middle rows (diagram 4).

- Step 6
- Sew together one top, one middle and one bottom unit to make one 3 1/2” checkerboard square (diagram 5).

- Step 7
- Make ten Fabric B/A checkerboard blocks.
- Step 8
- Repeat Steps 1-3 to make ten E/A checkerboard blocks, ten G/A checkerboard blocks and ten F/A checkerboard blocks.
- Step 9
- Repeat Step 1-3 using four 1 1/2” Fabric A strips and five 1 1/2” Fabric C strips to make 20 C/A checkerboard blocks. Repeat to make twenty D/A checkerboard blocks and twenty H/A checkerboard blocks.
- Step 10
- Refer to Block Layouts to make ten 9 1/2” Block One squares and ten 9 1/2” Block Two squares using the assorted checkerboard blocks and 3 1/2” Fabric A squares.
- Step 11
- Block 3
Place one 4 1/2” Fabric A square on top of one 4 1/2” Fabric I square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square (diagram 6). Sew 1/4” away from each side of the drawn diagonal line (diagram 6). Cut the two squares apart on the drawn diagonal line (diagram 7) to make two half-square triangles (diagram 8). Trim each half-square triangle block to a 37/8” square. - Step 12
- Place one half-square triangle from Step 7 on top of another half-square triangle, right sides together. Make sure the centre seam is going in the same direction on both half-square triangles and the Fabric A triangle in the top block is opposite from the Fabric I in the bottom block (diagram 9).

- Step 13
- Draw a diagonal line across the top half-square triangle so that it goes through the sewn seam. Sew 1/4” away from both sides of the drawn line (diagram 10). Cut on the drawn line to make two quarter-square triangles (diagram 11). Repeat to make 48 quarter-square triangles.

- Step 14
- Follow Block Three layout to sew together four quarter-square triangles and five 3 1/2” Fabric A squares to make one 9 1/2" Block Three square. Repeat to make twelve Block Three squares.

- Step 15
- Refer to the quilt photo and diagram 12 to sew together the pieced blocks and Fabric A setting triangles into diagonal rows. Sew the diagonal rows together to make the quilt top.
- Step 16
- Layer, quilt and bind as desired.
