Festive ’goose in a pond’

- Featuring a fabric called Memories 2 we’ve used a variation on a traditional quilt block for a festive effect.

- Quilt measures: 60” x 60” (150cm x 150cm)
1m cream homespun
• 1.8m Memories II check fabric (blocks & borders)
• 30cm Memories II small rosebud fabric
• 60cm Memories II large rose fabric *
• 1.5m red homespun (blocks, borders & binding)
• 20cm gold homespun
• 3.6m Memories II paisley fabric (backing)
• 1.8m x 1.8m batting
• matching Gütermann cotton thread
• rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
• quilting pins, tape measure
• scissors, seam ripper
• hand needle
• sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot
*note: If you wish to fussy the squares approx 1.2m of Memories II large floral fabric will be required. Quantity will vary if a different fabric is chosen for the quilt. It is advisable to always check your fabric with a template, before purchasing so you know you will have enough. - Step 1
- Cutting
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
From cream homespun background fabric) cut 16 x 4½ “ squares; 24 x 4 7/8” squares then cut these 24 squares in half diagonally to make 48 triangles.
From check fabric cut 4 x 4 x 8½” wide strips running lengthwise (parallel with selvedge) then crosscut into 2 x 44½” strips and 2 x 60½” strips; from the remainder cut 16 x 4 7/8” squares then cut in half diagonally to make 32 triangles.
From rosebud print cut 1 x 4 7/8” strip, crosscut into 8 x 4 7/8” squares then cut in half diagonally to make 16 triangles.
From large floral print cut 20 x 4½” squares.
From red homespun cut 6 x 1¾” strips; 12 x 2½” strips, join together to make one long strip then crosscut into 2 x 40 1/2” strips and 2 x 44½” strips for inner border, the remainder for the binding.
From the gold homespun cut 3 x 1½” strips. - Step 2
- Strip sets
Sew together a red 1¾” strip, a gold homespun 1½” strip and another red 1¾” strip to make a strip set (diagram 1). Make 3 in total then crosscut these into 16 x 4½” squares. - Step 3
- Half-square triangle units
ake 32 half-square triangle units using one check and one cream triangle.
Make 16 half-square triangle units using one rosebud and one cream triangle. - Step 4
- Blocks
Following diagram 2 layout each block (25 units in each). Sew the units together in rows then join the rows to make the block. Make 4 large blocks. - Step 5
- Quilt top
Sew the four blocks together being careful to pin and match all your seams. Sew the red 40½” strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, then the 44½” strips to each side. For the outer border sew the two 44½” x 8½” check strips to the top and bottom of the quilt then 60½” x 8½” check strips to each side. - Step 6
- Backing
Cut the 3.6m paisley fabric in half (2 x 1.8m lengths), remove the selvedge then sew together to make one large piece for the backing. - Step 7
- Finishing
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together. Quilt as desired. Press the remaining 2½” red strip in half lengthways and bind the quilt. Sign and date your quilt or attach a label.

- All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.
¼” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.
