- Materials
- Fabrics are from ‘Happy Owl’ range
• Happy Owl panel
• 1m Happy Owl Floral
• 1.1m Happy Owl Spot
• 90cm Happy Owl Branch (backing)
• 40cm Happy Owl Petals (binding)
• 120cm x 140cm Sew Easy cotton/bamboo batting
• Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
• Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
• Quilting pins, tape measure
• Scissors, seam ripper
• Hand needle
• Iron
• Sewing machine with 1/4” foot & walking foot
All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. 1/4” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.
Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt. - Step 1
- All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
• From floral fabric cut 3 x 2 1/2” strips and 3 x 8” strips.
• From spot fabric cut 6 x 3 1/2” strips and 2 x 8” strips.
• Square up branch fabric and trim off selvedges for the backing piece.
• From petals fabric cut 5 x 2 1/2” strips for binding. Trim the selvedge from all strips. - Step 2
- Panel
Trim panel leaving a minimum of 1/4” from the aqua strip on each side and at least 1/4” from borders of owl pictures at top and bottom. - Step 3
- Top & Bottom Border
2. Cut one 2 1/2” floral strip in half and join half to each of the remaining foral fabric 2 1/2” strips. Sew one of these strips to the top and one to the bottom of the quilt panel, press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. - Step 4
- Outside Border
Cut two 3 1/2” spot fabric strips in half and join half to each of the four remaining 3 1/2” spot fabric border strips. Press seams open. Sew one of these strips to the top and one to the bottom of the quilt, press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew the remaining strips to each side of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric. - Step 5
- Backing
Sew one 8” spot fabric strip to the top and one to the bottom of the branch backing fabric. Trim off any excess fabric and press seams open. Cut one 8” floral fabric strip in half and join half to each of the two remaining 8” floral fabric strips. Press seams open. Sew strips to each side of the quilt. Trim off any excess fabric and press seams open. - Step 6
- Quilting
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together. Quilt as desired. - Step 7
- Binding
Join the 5 x 2 1/2” petals binding strips to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
