Step 1

BODY & HEAD 1 - SANTA & MRS CLAUS
Cast on 33 sts using white.

Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: Knit.

Change to red and work 14 rows stocking st, starting with a knit row.

Waist Shaping: (K3, K2tog) to last 3 sts, K3... 27 sts.

Mrs Claus only:
Change to white and work 7 rows stocking st.

Neck Shaping: K1, (K2tog) to end... 14sts.

Mrs Claus - knit 1 row;
Santa - purl 1 row.
Change to cameo and work 2 rows.

Head Shaping: K1, inc in every st to last st, K1... 26sts.
Work 9 rows.

Shape Crown: (K1, K2 tog) to last 2 sts, K2... 18 sts.
Purl 1 row.
K2tog to end... 9 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 20cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam of head, after base is completed.
Work body base 1.

Step 2

BODY & HEAD 2 - SNOWMAN
Cast on 33 sts in white and work 18 rows of stocking st.

Waist Shaping: (K3, K2tog) to last 3 sts, K3... 27 sts.
Work 7 rows of stocking st.

Neck Shaping: K1, (K2tog) to end... 14 sts.
Work 2 rows stocking st.

Head Shaping: K1, inc in every st to last st, K1... 26 sts.
Work 9 rows.

Shape Crown: (K1, K2 tog) to last 2 sts, K2... 18 sts.
Purl 1 row.
K2 tog to end... 9 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 20cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam of head, after base is completed.
Work body base 1.

Step 3

BODY BASE 1 - for body & head 1, body & head 2, Christmas tree.

Pick up 25 sts along cast on edge of body in yarn to match.
Work 3 rows stocking st.

Shaping: (K2, K2tog) to last st, K1... 19 sts.
Purl 1 row.
(K1, K2tog) to last st, K1... 13 sts.
Purl 1 row.
Cut yarn leaving a 20cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Sew back seam of head and body to hem line, turn to right side and stuff, and sew closed.
Take thread up through body and tighten until it inverts to make a stable base for toy to stand.
Secure at the back of the neck or top for tree and neaten.

Step 4

BODY & HEAD 3 - ELVES
Cast on 33 sts using brown.

Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: Knit.
Repeat rows 1 & 2.

Shoe Shaping: K10, (K2tog) 3 times, K1, (K2tog) 3 times, knit to end.
P10, P3tog, P1, P3tog, purl to end... 23 sts.
Change to white and work 2 rows stocking st, starting with a knit row.
Change to green and work 4 rows stocking st.

Hip Shaping: K5, inc in next st, K12, inc in next st, knit to end.
Purl 1 row.
K6, inc in next st, K12, inc in next st, knit to end... 27 sts.
Purl 1 row.
Change to red and work 2 rows stocking st.

Plain Elf only: Change to green and work 6 rows stocking st.

Neck Shaping: K1, (K2tog) to end... 14sts.
Purl 1 row.

Stripe Top Elf only: Change to white and work 2 rows stocking st, change to green and work 2 rows stocking st, change to white and work 2 rows stocking st.

Neck Shaping: Change to red, K1, (K2tog) to end... 14sts.

Both Elves: Change to cameo and work 2 rows.

Head Shaping: K1, inc in every st to last st, K1... 26sts.
Work 9 rows.

Shape Crown: (K1, K2 tog) to last 2 sts, K2... 18 sts.

Cut yarn leaving a 20cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam of head, after base is completed.
Work body base 2.

Step 5

BODY BASE 2 - for elves
Pick up 23 sts along cast on edge of body in yarn to match.
Work 2 rows stocking st.

Shaping: (P2tog, P1) to last 2 sts, P2tog... 15 sts.
Knit 1 row.
P2tog to last st, P1... 8 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 20cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Sew back seam of head and body to hem line, turn to right side and stuff, and sew closed.
Take thread up through body and tighten until it inverts to make a stable base for toy to stand.
Secure at the back of the neck or top for tree and neaten.

Use matching yarn to shape legs, by threading yarn in and out in between sts.

Step 6

ARMS
Use yarn in appropriate colour.

Stripes for elf are worked in 2 rows of alternating green & white.

Cast on 8 sts in clothing colour and work 10 rows stocking st.
Change to contrast colour for cuff if required and knit 2 rows garter st.
Change to cameo and work 4 rows stocking st.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew seam of arm and turn to the right side.
Stuff and sew to body.

Step 7

BEARD - SANTA
Cast on 8 sts using white and knit 1 row.

Next row: K1, inc in every st to last st, K1... 14 sts.
Knit 4 rows.

Shaping: Dec 1 st at each end of every row until 4 sts rem.
Cast off.
Sew to face and neaten ends.

Step 8

SANTA’S HAT
Using white cast on 28 sts and knit 3 rows.
Change to red and work 6 rows stocking st.

Shape Top: (K2, K2tog) to end... 21 sts.
Work 3 rows of stocking st.
K2tog to end... 7 sts.
Work 5 rows of stocking st.
Change to white and work 2 rows garter st.

Pompom Shaping: K1, inc 1 st in each of next 5 sts, K1... 12 sts.
Knit 1 row.

Shaping: P2tog to end... 6 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam and turn to the right side.
Sew to hat head.

Step 9

ELF’S HAT
Using red or green cast on 28 sts and knit 3 rows.
Change to red or green & white for alternating stripe pattern and work 6 rows stocking st.

Shape Top: (K2, K2tog) to end... 21 sts.
Work 3 rows of stocking st.
K2tog to end... 7 sts.
Work 5 rows of stocking st.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam and turn to the right side.
Sew to hat head.

Step 10

COLLAR - SANTA & ELF
Cast on 28 sts and work 4 rows garter st.

Shaping: K2tog to end... 14 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam and secure around neck.

Step 11

SNOWMAN’S HAT
Using yellow cast on 28 sts and knit 3 rows.
Change to black and commence 2 row stripe pattern working 6 rows stocking st.

Shape Top: K2tog to end... 14 sts.
Purl 1 row.
K2tog to end... 7 sts.

Pompom: Change to yellow, K1, inc 1 st in each of next 5 sts, K1... 12 sts.
Knit 1 row.

Shaping: P2tog to end... 6 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam and turn to the right side.
Sew to hat head.

Step 12

SNOWMAN’S SCARF
Using black cast on 4 sts and knit 2 rows.
Do not cut yarn.
Change to yellow, knit 2 rows.
Do not cut yarn.
Change to black carrying yarn up the side and knit 2 rows.
Continue working 2 row alternating stripe pattern until 66 rows have been completed.
Cast off and add yellow fringe at each end.

Step 13

APRON - MRS CLAUS

Belt: Using lilac cast on 29 sts and knit 2 rows.

Buttonhole Row: K1, yfwd, K2tog, knit to end.
Cast off and neaten ends.

Apron Top: Pick up 7 sts in the centre along one side and work 5 rows of stocking st.
Cast off.

Apron Skirt: Pick up 11 sts in the centre along the opposite side and work 11 rows of stocking st.
Cast off.

Skirt Frill: Using 3mm crochet hook and with the right side facing, draw up a loop on the skirt close to the picked up st on belt.
Work 7dc along side edge, 2dc in corner, 7dc along base, 2dc in corner, 7dc along the other side, sl st into belt close to picked up st.
Turn.
(1dc, 1tr, 1dc) into each dc around.
Sl st into belt close to picked up st.
Fasten off.

Top Frill & Neck Strap: With right side facing, draw up a loop on the apron top close to the picked up row and work 4dc along side edge, 18ch, 4dc along opposite side edge, sl st into belt close to picked up st.
Turn.
(1dc, 1tr, 1dc) into each of 4 dc and first 4 ch, 1dc into each of next 10 ch, (1dc, 1tr, 1dc) into each of last 4 ch and last 4 dc.
Sl st into belt close to picked up st.
Fasten off.

Place strap over head and attach small button to secure around waist.

Step 14

HAIR - MRS CLAUS
Using grey cast on 28 sts and work 8 rows stocking st.

Shape Crown: K2tog to end... 14 sts.
Purl 1 row.
K2tog to end... 7 sts.
Purl 1 row.

Bun: Inc in every st... 14 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st.
K2tog to end... 7 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tailb through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to attach around head.

Step 15

CHRISTMAS PUDDING
Using brown cast on 24 sts and work 2 rows stocking st.
Purl 2 rows.
Work 4 rows of stocking st.

Shaping: K2tog to end... 12 sts.
Purl 1 row.
K2tog to end... 6 sts.
Purl 1 row.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew back seam after base is completed.

Pudding Base: Pick up 18 sts evenly along cast on edge, work 3 rows stocking st.

Shaping: K2tog to end... 9 sts.
Cast off.
Sew back seam to base, turn to right side, stuff and continue to sew closed.
Take thread up through pudding and tighten till it inverts, secure at the top and neaten.

Icing: Using white cast on 7 sts and work 8 rows stocking st.
Cast off.

Leaves (make 2): Cast on 4 sts, work 2 rows garter st.
Cast off.
Attach to icing and neaten ends.

Make French knots using red yarn for the berries.

Step 16

RUDOLPH
Using fern cast on 5 sts, and work 2 rows stocking st.
Inc in each st to end knitways... 10 sts.
Purl 1 row
Inc in each st to end knitways... 20 sts.
Work 17 rows of stocking st.

Shape Neck: K5, K2tog, turn, sl 1, purl to end.
K5, K2tog, turn, sl 1, purl to end.
K5, K2tog twice, knit to end P5, P2tog, turn, sl 1, knit to end.
P5, P2tog, turn, sl 1, knit to end.
P5, P2tog twice, purl to end.
Work 6 rows stocking st.
Purl 1 row.

Shape Head: K9, turn, sl 1, P5, turn.
Sl 1, K4, turn, sl 1, P3, turn.
Sl 1, knit to end. Purl 1 row.
K1, inc in each st to last st, K1... 18 sts.
Work 6 rows stocking st.

Shape Nose: K2tog to end... 9 sts.
Purl 1 row.
Change to red and work 2 rows stocking st.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail.
Thread tail through rem sts, tighten and secure.
With right sides facing sew together underneath from nose to 3cm from the end.
Turn to the right side, stuff and sew closed.

Legs (make 4): Using brown cast on 8 sts, and work 4 rows stocking st.
Change to fern and work 14 rows stocking st.
Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail. Thread tail through rem sts and tighten.
Use this yarn to sew seam of leg, turn to the right side, stuff and sew to body.

Ears (make 2): Cast on 5 sts, work 2 rows garter st and cast off.
Attach to head and neaten ends.
Use brown yarn to stitch eyes.

Step 17

CHRISTMAS TREE
Using green cast on 38 sts.

Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: Knit.
Work 6 rows stocking st, starting with a knit row.
Row 11: Purl.
Row 12: Knit.
Row 13: Knit.
Row 14: Purl.
Rows 11-14 create reverse stocking st.

Shaping: K3, (K2tog, K4) to last 5 sts, K2tog, K3... 32 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st.
Rep rows 11-14.
K2, (K2tog, K3) to the end... 26 sts.

Step 18

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

White Baubles: Using 3mm crochet hook *10ch, yoh, pull up a loop in 2nd ch from hook, [yoh, draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times, yoh, draw through all loops on hook; rep from * 4 more times to make 5 baubles, end with sl st in beg ch.
Fasten off.
Loosely attach around tree near 2nd set of reverse stocking st.

Red Baubles: Work as for white baubles but replace 10ch with 8ch.
Attach around tree between 3rd and 4th set of reverse stocking st.

Yellow Baubles: Work as for white baubles but replace 10ch with 6ch.
Attach around tree near 5th set of reverse stocking st.

Orange Baubles: Work as for white baubles but replace 10ch with 4ch.
Attach around tree near 6th set of reverse stocking st.

Star: Using 3mm crochet hook and yellow yarn work 2ch, 5dc into 1st ch. and join with a sl st in 1st dc to form a ring.

Rnd 2: (1dc, 1ch, 1dtr, 1ch, 1dc) into each dc (5 points), sl st into 1st dc, fasten off.
Sew to top of tree.

Step 19

SANTA SACK
Cast on 30 sts and work 24 rows stocking st.

Shaping: K1, K2tog to last st, K1... 16 sts.
Purl 1 row.
K3,( inc in next st, K2) 4 times, K1... 20 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st.
Cast off.

Patches (make 1 red & 1 green): Cast on 7 sts and work 8 rows, cast off.
Sew to sack using a running st and contrast colour yarn.

Ties: Using red, cast on 50 st and knit 2 rows.
Change to green, knit 1 row.
Cast off and neaten ends.
Stuff sack and tie off at shaping.

Step 20

PRESENTS
Cast on 10 sts and work 6 rows of stocking st.
Cast on 4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows... 18 sts.
Work a further 4 rows stocking st.
Cast off 4 sts at beg of the next 2 rows... 10 sts.
Work a further 10 rows stocking st.
Cast off.

Over sew sides to form box shape leaving one side open.
Turn to right side, stuff and sew closed.

Tie: Using 3mm crochet hook, make 100ch and fasten off.
Tie around present.

Step 21

FINISHING:
Using yarn needle, neaten all loose ends and finish all people by adding eyes, mouths and moustache where needed.

Use brown chenille sticks to make antlers for Rudolf and arms for snowman, thread through work, ensuring an even amount on each side, shape to form shapes as in picture.
