Mystery Quilt: WEEK THREE

Welcome back to the Mystery Quilt... I know everyone is pretty excited. In WEEK THREE we are covering Motifs - Colour blocking (Intarsia) & Knitting stitch embroidery. Enjoy!
Materials
The Quilt is made using Moda Vera Marvel 8ply (100g balls).
Step 1
SQUARE TWELVE - COLOUR BLOCKING (INTARSIA)
Intermediate Knitting

You will need a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C11 - 1013 (eclipse)
C5 - 1024 (blue)
4 yarn bobs.

Using 4.00mm needles and C11, cast on 45 sts.

1st row - * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Last row forms moss st.
Work a further 5 rows moss st (6 rows in all).

Beg Patt -
Next row - (K1, P1) twice, knit to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.
Next row - (K1, P1) twice, purl to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.
Rep last 2 rows twice (6 rows patt in all).

Beg Intarsia Patt -
* NOTE - When changing colours in centre of row, twist colour to be used underneath and to the right of colour just used, making sure yarns are worked firmly at joins.
It is necessary to use a separate ball of yarn for each section of colour, although full ball can be used for first section.
To minimise tangles wind small amounts of yarn onto yarn bobs.
Unwind only enough yarn to knit the required sts, keeping yarn bob close to work.

13th row - Using C11 (K1, P1) twice, K9, using C5 K2, using C11 K15, using C5 K2, using C11 knit to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.
14th row - Using C11 (K1, P1) twice, P9, using C5 P3, using C11 P13, using C5 P3, using C11 purl to last 4
sts, (P1, K1) twice.

Working from Graph for Square 12, work rows 15 to 64 incl.
Using C11, cast off loosely in moss st.
Your square should measure approximately 21cm x 21cm if your tension is correct.
You may need to adjust your needle size to achieve the stated measurement.
If square is smaller than stated try again using 4.50mm needles, and if square is larger than stated try again using 3.75mm needles.
Step 2
SQUARE THIRTEEN - COLOUR BLOCKING (INTARSIA)
Intermediate Knitting

You will need a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C12 - 1019 (chocolate)
C7 - 1021 (brown marle)
4 yarn bobs.

Work as given for Square 12, using C12 in place of C11 and C7 in place of C5.
Step 3
SQUARE FOURTEEN - COLOUR BLOCKING (INTARSIA)
Intermediate Knitting

You will need a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C10 - 1002 (black)
C8 - 1023 (dark grey marle)
4 yarn bobs.

Work as given for Square 12, using C10 in place of C11 and C8 in place of C5.
Step 4
SQUARE FIFTEEN - KNITTING STITCH EMBROIDERY
Easy Knitting

You will need a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C1 - 1038 (duck egg)
C4 - 1006 (denim)
wool needle for embroidery.

Using 4.00mm needles and C1, cast on 45 sts.

1st row - * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Last row forms moss st.
Work a further 5 rows (6 rows in all).

Beg Patt -
Next row - (K1, P1) twice, knit to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.
Next row - (K1, P1) twice, purl to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.
Work a further 50 rows patt (52 rows patt in all).
Work 6 rows moss st as given in 1st row.
Cast off loosely in moss st.

Using Knitting St embroidery and C4, embroider heart using Graph for Square 15. Open PDF of graph here http://tinyurl.com/Wk3-Block15

Your square should measure approximately 21cm x 21cm if your tension is correct.

If square is smaller than stated try again using 4.50mm needles, and if square is larger than stated try again using 3.75mm needles.
Step 5
SQUARE SIXTEEN - KNITTING STITCH EMBROIDERY
Easy Knitting

You will need a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C2 - 1005 (fawn)
C6 - 1026 (dark red)

Work as given for Square 15, using C2 in place of C1, and C6 in place of C4.
Step 6
SQUARE SEVENTEEN - KNITTING STITCH EMBROIDERY
Easy Knitting

You will need a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C3 - 1022 (blue grey marle)
C10 - 1002 (black)

Work as given for Square 15, using C3 in place of C1, and C10 in place of C4.
