Final Result
Materials
50cm dark blue denim
20cm drill or homespun in colour of choice for silhouette (hot pink)
1.2m x 32mm polyester belting in colour to match silhouette fabric (hot pink)
Dark blue or black Gutermann cotton thread
Gutermann Sulky Rayon 40 thread to match or contrast with silhouette fabric
Rocker Chic buttons (4 cards – 12 buttons)
40cm Vliesofix
Scissors
Hand sewing needle
Sewing machine
Iron
Pencil
Appliqué mat or baking paper
Step 1
Cut two rectangles 36cm wide x 38cm high from the denim.
Step 2
Draw or trace a guitar silhouette onto the paper side of the Vliesofix then roughly cut out leaving a 5cm border around the edge.
Step 3
Using a dry iron fuse the design to the wrong side of the drill (hot pink) making sure Vliesofix is paper side up. Note: Cover with appliqué mat or baking paper before ironing to prevent any excess glue adhering to the iron. Allow to cool.
Step 4
Using sharp scissors carefully cut out guitar silhouette and remove backing paper. Position cut out design, fabric side up, on one of the rectangles from step 1, and fuse in place.
Step 5
. Set machine to satin stitch and using Gutermann Sulky Rayon 40 thread start sewing along one straight side of the guitar neck (it is easier to start and finish on a straight edge). Make sure the needle goes through the appliqué on one side then the fabric on the other. Work slowly around the curved sections continuing until you get back to the start.
Step 6
Set machine to straight stitch. Pin bag front to bag back with right sides facing and using a 1.5cm seam allowance sew together down one side, across the bottom and up the other side. Press seams open. Turn top edge under 1cm and press, turn under another 1.5cm and press. Stitch close to this folded edge.
Step 7
. Cut belting into 2 x 60cm lengths and zigzag the cut ends to prevent fraying. Pin ends of one strap to the inside of the bag front, 5cm in from side seams, so strap ends are even with the bottom of the hem. To attach handle stitch through bag and strap layers across the top and bottom of the hem allowance, going across each handle end twice. Repeat on back of bag. Turn bag right side out and press.
Step 8
Arrange a selection of Rocker Chic buttons on the bag then hand sew buttons in place using black thread.
