What a Hoot - Owl quilt & toys

Materials
Quilt measures: 41½” x 72”

What you’ll need for the Quilt:
Fabrics are from ‘What a Hoot’ range
• 1.2m What a Hoot Owl - white
• 50cm What a Hoot Owl - blue
• 70cm What a Hoot Ditsy - blue
• 70cm What a Hoot Spot - pink
• 40cm fabric for binding
• 1.2m wide backing fabric
• 1.2m Cosy Cotton natural wadding
• Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
• Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
• Quilting pins, tape measure
• Scissors, seam ripper
• Hand needle
Sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot

What you’ll need for the toys:
• Hobby fill
• Felt - pink, blue, white
• Perle #5 thread - pink, blue
• Vliesofix
• Baking paper or appliqué mat
Step 1
QUILT - CUTTING

From white owl fabric cut the following:
A - 25½” x 25”;
B - 25½” x 15”;
C - 12½” x 16½”.

From blue owl fabric cut the following:
D - 26” x 17”;
E - 17 x 16½”.

From blue ditsy fabric cut the following:
F - 8½” x 25”;
G - 16½” x 15”.

From pink spot fabric cut the following:
H - 8½” x 25”;
I - 16”x 17”;
J - 13” x 16½”.
Step 2
QUILT TOP
Lay out all pieces as per diagram.

Join the pieces in each row together.
Press seams to the darker fabric.

Join the rows together and press seams in one direction.
Step 3
FINISHING

Cut wadding and backing 3” larger than quilt top on all sides.

Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together.
Quilt as desired.

Cut 6 x 2¼” strips of backing fabric and join together on the bias into one length.
Press strip in half lengthways and bind the quilt.
sign and date your quilt or attach a label.
Step 4
INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE ONE TOY OWL

Enlarge the pattern to desired size and cut out pieces.
From printed cotton fabric cut 2 x bodies.
From coordinating printed cotton fabric cut 2 x wings.
From white felt cut 2 x outer eyes.
From blue felt cut 2 x inner eyes.
From pink felt cut 1 x nose & 2 x feet.
From Vliesofix cut 2 x outer eyes, 2 x inner eyes, 1 x nose & 2 x wings.
Step 5
Cover ironing board with baking paper or appliqué mat and fuse Vliesofix to back of each felt shape and wings.
Peel backing paper off inner eyes and fuse one to the middle of each of the outer eyes.
Step 6
Starting with the nose, fuse felt shapes to body front of owl as per pattern.
Using pink perle thread, sew a large cross in the centre of each of the inner eyes.
Using pink or blue thread, stitch long stitches radiating around each outer eye, and to stitch long stitches down each of the wings.
Step 7
Place the two owl body pieces right sides facing and using a 1cm seam allowance sew edges together leaving the bottom edge open.
Clip corners and curved seams.
Place felt feet inside the body of owl body aligning straight raw edges and with each foot 5.5cm in from each side seam.
Using a 1cm seam allowance, sew bottom edges together 11cm in from each side, leaving an opening in the centre.
Step 8
To create a flat bottom for owl, match the side seam to the centre of the bottom and pin together.
Mark 1.5cm (for 3cm base), 2.5cm (for 5cm base) or 4.5cm (for 8cm base) down from the point and rule across to form a triangle.
Stitch across the end then add a second row of stitching 3mm from the first.
Trim seam cutting off the point.
Repeat for other end of the base.
Carefully turn owl right side out.
Press outer seams.
Step 9
Point felt feet towards the front of owl.
Using blue perle thread, sew feet to the owl’s body at the same time topstitching long stitches on feet to create toes, catch the thread through the body and tie off inside body.
Step 10
Stuff the owl with hobby fill through the bottom opening to desired fullness.
Hand stitch opening at base of owl closed.
Note
All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed &
pressed.
¼” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.
